Exhuming McCarthy
I’m late getting to this video, but it is worth your time if you have yet to see it. The major point of the video is the scary symmetry between McCarthy’s rhetoric and the new class of conserva-bot pundits, and it makes this point quite well. However, there is something else that jumped out at me while watching this… Notice the intellectual level of discourse in Murrow’s time as compared to what we see today. From our vantage point in this swirl of floating signifiers, it is stunning to hear a newsperson speak in complex sentences referencing classical thought and historical allusion. This was POPULAR MEDIA in its time!
Have we really fallen that far?
