Back to the Courts
It is a sad reality that the only way to achieve substantive school reform in the US is through the court system, but it is fraught with dangers. The difference between the civil rights era and today’s educational malaise is that we now face a well-funded machine of venture philanthropists and think tanks poisoning public discourse and debate in favor of our corporate masters. This week the ACLU filed a lawsuit against the state of Florida asking a judge to step in and force the state to create a plan to increase graduation rates in Palm Beach County. How this plays out could signal whether a legal avenue will work this go around… I am dubious. This could just as easily lead to court mandated chart schools and privatization as it could substantive investment in schooling.
