Knowledge-Power Nexus Part Deux
The shenanigans over textbook policy in Texas continues apace, but the reality of what is going on and its implications for the nation as a whole are lost on most folks.Washington Monthly
The Monthly has been keeping an eye on the Texas Board of Education over the last several months, which has been working on a social studies curricula steeped in conservative Republican ideology. It’s a rather remarkable story: board members — 10 Republicans to 5 Democrats — have recommended downplaying the contributions of civil rights leaders, minimizing an “emphasis on multiculturalism,” and trying to “exonerate” Joe McCarthy.
So, let me sum it up as clearly as I can… Modern education reformers [especially conservatives in places like Texas] are intent on ensuring that we remain under-educated fools capable of only holding a job but unable to critically analyze our world [ie. question power]. That may sound hyperbolic, but it is the necessary outcome of current reform pushes. Period.
